It’s messy, thrilling, and risky. Life as an athlete can be full of excitement, but running across a wet and muddy field determined to score a goal and having no regards for oneself can lead to some serious life altering injuries.

Think of soccer. The game is played with two sets of eleven players on a field. Rain or shine, there is no stopping a game once it has started.

The players commit their blood and sweat to their work and even student Leslie Cisneros who said, “Life’s a game. Soccer is serious,” believes she must put all of her attention and dedication to this sport.

Leslie Cisneros is a junior who played on the Sobrato Girls Varsity soccer team all three years, and tore her ACL in the process.

“It is a common injury and really painful,” said Mr. Jason Carreras, the girls soccer coach.

The ACL is a ligament that helps connect the knees joints together, and repairing a torn ACL can be a long recovery process.

This injury can be common in soccer especially if a player does not do the proper warm ups.

As it was Carreras’ first year being the varsity soccer coach, he didn’t want to come across this issue throughout the season.

“It actually takes about forty-five minutes to do an appropriate warm up, so I started a program to help decrease the amount of injuries my girls might receive in the season,” Carreras said.

To prevent injuries like Leslie’s, Coach Carreras started a program that his players do once or twice a week. It is a drill of warm ups that helps strengthen the muscles in the legs and targets specifically to the knees and ankles.

As a result, injuries significantly decreased this season.
